Duplex stainless steels are extremely corrosion resistant, work hardenable alloys. Their microstructures consist of a mixture of austenite and ferrite phases.
In most cases, duplex stainless steels are tougher than ferritic stainless steels. In some cases, duplex stainless steels can be twice as strong as austenitic stainless steels.
While duplex stainless steels are considered resistant to stress corrosion cracking, they are not as resistant as ferritic stainless steels. However, the least corrosion resistant duplex stainless steels are more corrosion resistant than the most commonly used grades, namely 304 and 316.
Duplex steels are also magnetic, a property that can be used to easily distinguish them from common austenitic stainless steel grades.
