Galvanized steel has many applications beyond construction and automotive. Galvanized steel is used to make corrosion-resistant nuts, bolts and nails. Used for outdoor piping when plastic piping is not strong enough. It is used for bus stop benches, balconies, verandahs, stairs, walkways and ladders.
Galvanized coatings are more susceptible to corrosion than steel and provide cathodic or sacrificial protection for small areas of steel exposed by damage. Unlike organic coatings, small damaged areas do not need to be touched up.
Hot-dip galvanizing (HDG) provides three levels of corrosion resistance to steel: barrier protection, cathodic protection, and zinc patina. Like other coatings, hot-dip galvanizing isolates the steel from the environment, providing basic barrier protection.
